The kitchen is just as significant as the bedroom or the dining room. Families usually have wonderful recollections of important occasions that happened in the kitchen. Its decoration, therefore, should also be integrated with the decoration used for the rest of the house.

Contemporary kitchen designers have experimented with bold colors that by tradition are unusual for use in the kitchen. Turquoise, cobalt blue, red, yellow, orange and deep, rich green are among the modern color schemes used. If you still prefer natural, subdued colors however, you do not have to worry as these colors still fit the contemporary kitchen design. Brown, concrete gray and stone hues are among the muted colors that are still in use.

Whether traditional or modern, kitchens should always be neat and clutter-free. Storage spaces should be multi-purposed such that it should also provide an aesthetic feel. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets are a perfect example. Traditionally, bulky cabinets take up too much space. Modern kitchen fixtures and equipment have become more slim and sleek so that even storage space has shrunk. As an alternative to floor-to-ceiling cabinets, steel shelves situated on upper walls may house the microwave and other less frequently used pieces while the wooden cabinets, which are more accessible, contain everyday food supplies and other necessities.

Aside from storage spaces, kitchen fixtures should also have multiple purposes. The countertop serves as a workstation as well as a bar counter or even a dining table. Even modern appliances have evolved to include more uses. Some refrigerators are equipped with a “Soft freezing” mode where frozen food are allowed to remain soft so that they can be chopped and cut without being thawed.

Contemporary kitchens should be a blend of functionality, convenience and a more adventurous style of decorating. Blazing and dark colors such as red and black are traditionally unusual in a kitchen but has now provided kitchens with a more modern appearance. Even curves are becoming more popular nowadays as countertops, traditionally made with straight lines are now being produced with curves.
