India themed interiors are very popular nowadays for several reasons. First of all, it is very elegant, but not only that, this elegance is new. For those who are all tired of the same old Victorian or Grecian influence of white marble and other rigid and stuffy facades then the decoration in India is the best alternative.
Have you ever seen this decoration in India typical of big mansions of the more eccentric or new age people? Well imagine this. The small decor consists of odd eastern looking thin figures in ornamental clothing usually thin Buddhas with the usual smile on their faces. This smile is the Zen smile signifying detachment from the world which is mostly a detachment from the material problems. Then there is the presence of intricate patterns, whirling shapes of gold or silver or wood. There is also a big use of rugs, massive rugs of Arabian influence and designs just like those flying carpets in the stories of a hundred and one Arabian nights. You can also use big urns or jars to place in the corners of the house or rooms. Bead work is another decoration in India that has many uses. Here is a closer look.
Buddha Figures and Images
The ever popular Buddha image is a symbol for India because that is where the faith originated in. A good Buddha figure would be one that is made up of only one or two materials. Should you think of the fat Buddha, then you will be mistaken because that is a different Buddha which came from China. The slim Buddhas are more tasteful and fit well with the modern minimalist taste. Also remember that elephants also popular as an Indian icon so use these too.
Rugs
The rugs need to be used wisely. Unless you really want to achieve a look with much draperies hanging from above and luxurious billowing curtains, then you can have a lot of rugs too. But if not, rugs should be minimal but should also be big. Placing one in the middle of the living room is a great idea, just in front of the fireplace. The Indian patters will be great to draw the eyes into the center of the room.
Beads
As with rugs, using beads should also be done with care. Almost all decoration in India have beads. The most popular use is to take strands of these beads and hang them into an entry point or into an archway and this will serve as a kind of divider and curtain.
