Liven Up Your Home With Vibrant Colors from India

Those in the West who are contemplating bringing India into their homes have to love flaunting and should be prepared for what Indian homes are known for: excess.  Brilliant colors in the interior are complemented by natural shades such as white, ocean tones and terracotta; no doubt an influence of India’s two main religions: Islam and Hinduism.  Wall colors are usually bold and blazing, such as turquoise, scorching hot shades of yellow, fiery red, or intense pink.

The interior of the home is filled with drama, with the walls bursting with ornamentations.  The kind of wall hangings is numerous, ranging from patchworks to fascinating mirror works to hand painted wood.  Tapestry wall hangings are also common, usually adorned with images of Hindu gods and goddesses, or elephants which are considered sacred in Hinduism.  These wall ornamentations do not simply adorn but are also symbols of welcome and hospitality.

Costly silk carpets from Kashmir grace the floors of Western homes fashioned after those of India.  Such carpets are status symbols in traditional Indian homes.  Those who prefer less costly materials buy cotton or pile wool rugs.  Whichever the material used, these rugs usually feature floral designs or patterns that depict nature.

Aside from wall ornamentation, Indian homes are also known to display their collection of China and crystals, accumulated from different parts of the world.  Cabinets house these collections, which are not only limited to crystals or china but to any shiny and bright item.

Sofas are also filled with cushions of the same dazzling colors as the walls.  Fabrics woven with floral designs or adorned with sequins or beads can be also draped around sofas or may be used to embellish the floor.  The ornamentation will not be complete without wooden sculptures, brass pots, lanterns, lamps, and wrought iron furniture and decorative pieces.  The incense completes the whole picture as no Indian or Indian-inspired home interior is without it.

Decorating an Indian-inspired Western home need not be a complicated process.  One only has to think of everything in excess, from furnishings to ornaments to colors, and he can easily create India in the West.
