Practical Asian Home Decor Ideas

The Asian way of decorating their homes is being incorporated into Western residences, presumably as a result of increasing pressure in the urban environment.  Asian homes infuse a sense of peace and balance which most people in the working world crave for.  People wish to simplify their lives and they start by simplifying their surroundings, thus the Asian décor.

Asian styled decorating has influences from many Asian countries, including Japan, China and Vietnam.  Whatever the country of origin, however, Asian interiors emanate both simplicity and serenity.

The colors used are a bit different depending on the Asian culture being followed.  Japanese interiors are usually enveloped in natural, muted colors.  Although bold and bright colors are used, they are only meant to be complementary to the subtle hues.  Chinese interiors on the other hand have red as its primary color, which represents good luck.  Gold is usually found on most Asian décor accents.

Lighting in Asian homes is usually supplied by low-wattage bulbs diffused through rice-paper lamps.  The light is actually quite dim but adds a warm, soft glow to the room.  Bulbs in hanging rice-paper lanterns are also an alternative to lamps.

Furniture in most Asian homes is kept at minimum and it is common to see furniture that serves multiple purposes.  A futon may serve as both a seat and a bed.  Wooden trunks may be used both as a storage piece and a table top.

The use of natural materials and of pieces that are part of nature itself distinguishes the Asian style of decorating from other decorating styles.  Water is a prominent natural element as most Asian homes have either a water fountain in the interior or standing water with fish in the exterior.  Plants also provide a feeling of being in touch with nature.  In most Asian-inspired homes, there are two plants commonly used for ornamentation: bamboo and bonsai.  Both can be bought at the store although the bonsai may probably cost more and would require more care.

Remember that an Asian home promotes minimalism so do not accumulate too many Asian pieces to be placed in a single space.  Your goal is to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere and this through using as few furnishings as possible.

    Hi,

I have a platform that was meant for bed, but we decided not to have that. I am wondering if I can create an office space in japanese zen style. I just need some ideas of how this can be done. Not keen on having bulky desks on the platform, would want to be able to sit on the floor and work.

Any ideas? I would appreciate some visual examples

    Cheers
