Stunning Scandinavian Design Ideas For Your Home

Swedish home interiors exude elegance, glamour and a clean, casually aged appearance.  Swedish home décor are influenced by Scandinavian weather – long, dreary winter months.  White and neutral-colored linens and wood furnishings results to lighter interiors even during gloomy, winter days.  If you’re thinking of a Swedish-inspired home, go for white, cream or soft blue tones. A light-colored home speaks of both simplicity and elegance.  Not only walls are painted these colors, but ceilings, furniture and accessories as well.  In fact, painted furniture is characteristic of a Swedish home.  In order to compliment your white or pale-hued fabrics, paint your furniture a similar color.  Other tones, which are equally pale, are used as accents in hand-painted decorations.

Patterns in fabrics are kept simple, usually only checks and stripes.  The fabrics, like almost the rest of the house are in light hues.  However, accents of red can be found, such as in floral designs, which provide a wonderful contrast to white.  These fabrics are soft, usually made of linen or cotton.

During winter months in Sweden, natural light is usually absent or lacking.  Thus, the lighting and accessories are designed to provide as much light inside the house as possible.  You may consider purchasing lighting that has reflective surfaces or accessories that sparkle.  Chandeliers and mirrors, for example, create the appearance of a brighter interior.  Windows are usually unobstructed or are covered by thin fabrics in order to make the most of natural light.

Swedish beds exhibit clean lines or upholstered headboards and footboards.  Bed canopy, like the rest of the fabrics used inside the house, are usually white or pale-colored.

Benches usually adorn the interior of Swedish homes.  Swedish style sofas have wooden frames and minimal upholstery.

Furniture, if not painted white, are covered with slipcovers or cushions.  The furniture are also decorated with carvings and moldings.  The carvings are usually seen in fluted legs, scrolled table borders and mirror frames.
